Try the following remedies for relieving excessive flatulence.
Please Note: When using natural remedies, special care should be taken in case of pregnancy, babies, and adults on prescribed medication. Always consult your physician first.
Ginger
Ginger is a wonderful herb with tons of health benefits, including controlling flatulence, as well as reducing burping and bloating. It’s known for its digestive features and has been used since ancient times. Ginger is highly anti-inflammatory. It reduces gas and stimulates digestion, helping the stool to pass smoothly and quickly, leaving the stomach (intestines) clean and empty. As no food is left behind in the stomach, the amount of gas is highly reduced. Ways to use ginger include:
> Capsules: 100 mg of ginger 2 or 3 times a day is enough to avoid bloating and prevent gas.
> Tinctures: 30 drops before meal is a great way of natural treatment of gas in the stomach.
> Tea Bags: Drink a cup of Ginger tea after your meal.
> Ginger can also be eaten raw. Just slice off a piece, bite it, chew it and swallow it. Keep in mind that ginger is very strong so take only a small amount at first until you get used to it. You can also grate the ginger into boiling water, wait 5 minutes, then sip it.
Cardamom
Cardamom can be added to tea, boiled water, or simply chewed.
Peppermint
Peppermint can be used in tea bags. The fresh leaves can also be chewed, or simply dropped into boiled water. Peppermint contains menthol, which helps to reduce gas and bloating.
Warning: It has been reported that peppermint should not be used in cases of astroesophageal reflux or heart burn. So be cautious!
Papaya
Christopher Columbus called Papaya “fruit of the angels”. It is rich in vitamins C, A, K and E. It contains antioxidants and flavonoids, as well as an enzyme called papain, which helps in digesting proteins (thus reducing gas in the stomach). Papaya enzymes are available as supplements, however, these should not be used without the concent of your doctor. Eating the whole fruit is much safer and beneficial.
Papaya is also used in tea form. The tea is made of papaya leaves. The Proteolytic enzymes have the ability to break down protein into smaller and lesser complex structures. This makes it easier for the stomach to digest food.
Warning: Papaya tea is a diuretic and must be used with care. Always read the label and follow the advice by the manufacturer before using Papaya tea or other such products containing papaya enzymes.
Fennel Seeds
Chewing fennel seeds after meals not only cures bad breath but also reduces gas. Simply chew half a spoonful after meals for the desired result. The terpenoid anethole in fennel seed is great for digestion, and for the relief of cramps. It is often seen in the Indian Restaurants in bowels. (It’s best if the seeds are not coated with sugar.)
Chamomile Tea
A hot cup of camomile tea is a great way to reduce the passing of gas.
Probiotics
Probiotics balance the stomach environment against the gas producing intestinal bacteria. (Click here for more on gut bacteria.)
